80th Anniversary of the Arnsberg Viaduct Raid

Celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Arnsberg Viaduct raid, as well as the testing of the Grand Slam “Ten-Ton Tess” bombs at Ashley Walk Range, near Godshill in the New Forest. Aircraft on these initial trials flew from RAF Boscombe Down, before the operational raid was undertaken by 617 Squadron

1000 – Coffee / tea

1030 – Start with introduction from John Sharpe followed by Rob Owen talking about the 617 Squadron operations involving B1 Specials and Grand Slam bombs in the last two months of World War 2 in Europe, with a detailed account of the Attack on Arnsberg viaduct operation on 19 March 1945 and a tribute to Benny Goodman including a question and answer session.

1200 – 1230 – Andrew Panton premieres “Attack on Arnsberg Viaduct” film as well as “making of” film

1230 – 1300 – Break for lunch

1300 – 1345 – Caroline Stewart presents technical overview of SABS MKIIA design and operation as well as overview on earthquake bombs and post Word War 2 developments.

1345 – 1445 – Ron Fulton presents Building the Beast PD130

1445 – 1530 – Move to hangar to see PD130. Rob, Caroline take questions on the B1 Special, SABS MKIIA and Grand Slam bomb and Ron is available for further questions on the build process.

1530 – Event ends
