D-Day80

This year we commemorate 80 years since the D-Day landings, men and women who participated in this event at the end of World War II will be in their nineties or older! ***STOP PRESS! Look up to the skies the morning of June 04 as three WWII Austers fly past Old Sarum Airfield ****

Here in our parish, Old Sarum Airfield played an important role in D-Day, from Feb 26, 1944 to the following December the camps at the airfield saw over seventy-seven thousand service personnel and support staff pass through – you can find out more about this on the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection (BDAC) website, and as part of a planned D-Day exhibition which will be on display in June.

We would love our residents to join us in commemorating the sacrifices made and bravery displayed in order to bring about peace.

HOW CAN I TAKE PART?

You can take part by creating and displaying some d-day bunting for your home or school on June 06.

Or perhaps you can join us for the Drumhead Service outside BDAC on June 06 at 7 pm, with special guests – the Amesbury Town Band, a service led by celebrant David Linaker, March Out and the lighting of the Lamps of Peace. Dark Revolution Brewery will be launching their Overlord Ale in Association with BDAC and there will be a D-Day Trail from the 06 – 08 at BDAC with talks and demos including Pack-A-Parachute, Wessex Archaeology, and on June 08 from 2 pm three VIP speakers Marc Heighway, Chris Barrington Brown and Dan Miles will give talks.
