My current concern is the Bus Stop in town for the P&R7 outside of Tesco Supermarket in Castle Street. It is a concern to many residents especially pensioners needing somewhere to rest/sit whilst waiting for the bus. Historically the P&R7 used the bus stop outside of Lloyds Bank on Blue Boar Row. There were seats in the shelter and a bench seat adjacent to the stop whereas outside Tesco only a bus stop is available, no shelter and no seating is provided. The queue often gets in the way of other pedestrians, and we must stand near to an offensive waste bin. Further it gives a messy impression to our visiting tourists using the Park and Ride Service, one that in fact disgraces the Medieval City of Salisbury.
I became involved with Laverstock and Ford parish council when I was asked to represent the views of residents opposed to the Salisbury City Council ‘take-over bid’ back in 2016. After a career in local councils and the voluntary sector I am opposed to political party involvement at Parish Council level, and I made this point to Wiltshire Council who in turn refused to support the takeover.
I represent the Bishopdown Farm ward which extends to cover Riverdown and Hampton Park.
Over the years I have been involved in much the parish council’s policy development, the review of the parish council, gaining double yellow lines in St Clements Way to protect the free flow of our bus service, four bus shelters, opening up Hampton Trail in The Oakbournes, Drakes Close and Oldfield Road, and I was privileged to be asked to plant the first English Oak tree at the WW1 Memorial wood, Castle Hill Country Park on November 11th 2018.
Since November 2022 I have been continuously questioning the state of the housing stock owned by Sanctuary Housing Association on the estate with support from Ian McClennan our previous WC councillor and eventually John Glen MP. Thankfully they are finally upgrading the properties. It must be such a great relief to the residents living there.
I serve on the joint advisory committee with the Land Trust and Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, who manage the Castle Hill Country Park. I am the current vice-chair of the Parish Council, and I chair the Personnel Committee of the PC.
As a councillor, I support community involvement, representation, equality of access to open spaces, services, employment and value for money for residents.
Besides my parish council role, I am the Speaker Secretary for Sarum u3a, a keen birdwatcher, a regular swimmer and bridge player, often losing!
