Ephemeral Pond Pier re-opened by Parish Council
A newly installed pier over the ephemeral pond at Whitebridge Spinney in Laverstock will once again allow young environmentalists and pond-watchers to look out for frogs, toads and other amphibian, plant and insect species.

Ephemeral ponds, are unique, as they dry out at certain times of the year. Because of this, they’re usually absent from fish, which makes them an ideal habitat for amphibian tadpole shrimp. The shrimp hatch and breed in this freshwater hideaway until they dry out again.
The ephemeral pond along the Whitebridge Spinney boardwalk is part of the wider diverse ecology of the Laverstock Water Meadows, lying within damp Alder woodland amongst important species of wildflowers which attract pollinating insects. The Pier is a popular location for local schools and groups to undertake environmental studies and for walkers and residents to rest and watch the adjacent river Bourne.
Joe Elder, Operations Manager for Laverstock & Ford Parish Council commented that “the previous wooden structure was showing signs of rot in the structural timbers and it was deemed as unsafe, a resolution was made by Laverstock & Ford Parish Council to replace the timber with a composite material. Following an environmental assessment to establish if water voles were present, the green light was given for work to proceed. A team from AD (Southern) Ltd. worked in difficult conditions and high water levels to complete the work before the holiday season. The benefit of completing the Pier now is that the vegetation will recover for the spring when the pond will fill, and new life will flourish”.
The pier is now re-opened to the public.
